Shops
Purpose
In an Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and/or Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), "shops" are typically used to organize maintenance activities based on the physical location of equipment or maintenance staff. A shop can be defined as a specific area or department within an organization where maintenance activities are performed, and where maintenance staff and equipment are assigned. Shops can be used in several ways within an EAM/CMMS:
- Asset Management: Shops can be used to manage assets by grouping them based on their physical location or function. For example, a manufacturing plant might have a shop for assembly line equipment, another shop for material handling equipment, and a third shop for HVAC equipment.
- Work Order Management: Shops can be used to manage work orders by assigning them to specific shops based on the type of work required and the availability of maintenance staff and equipment. This helps to ensure that work orders are completed efficiently and that maintenance staff are deployed to the correct location.
- Preventive Maintenance: Shops can be used to manage preventive maintenance activities by grouping assets based on their maintenance requirements and scheduling preventive maintenance activities for each shop. This helps to ensure that maintenance activities are performed at the right time and that equipment downtime is minimized.
- Inventory Management: Shops can be used to manage inventory by assigning inventory items to specific shops and tracking inventory levels for each shop. This helps to ensure that inventory items are available when needed and that inventory levels are optimized. Overall, shops are an important tool within an EAM/CMMS for organizing maintenance activities based on the physical location of assets and maintenance staff, which can help to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of maintenance operations.
